(Game face and goggles on... the scientists of room 210 don't mess around when it comes to investigations. Ask them all about their discoveries!)
Hoppy Spring! 🐰🌷☀️
Can you believe that spring break is already here?! I truly can't believe how quickly this year is flying by. Before I know it... the students will be heading off to 6th grade 😭. Within the last couple months, there is still much to be learned, fun to be enjoyed, and memories to be made!
We have started our 6th grade placement testing. Please refer to the handout given at conferences for more information about placement testing. On days of testing, please remember to remind your student to get a good night's rest and eat a healthy breakfast. The students have been doing such an awesome job on the past two assessments -- I am so proud of all their hard work and effort!
Here's to a wonderful spring break and time well spent with loved ones!!
Literacy
**We are finishing up unit 4 in literacy, which encompasses the theme of "Exploring New Worlds". Our grade level texts are Explorers: Triumphs and Troubles and Pedro's Journal. Both texts highlights the topic of explorers and expedition, and students were able to discuss the positive and negative effects of exploration. We are also examining the texts' different point of views to analyze its affect on people's perception of exploration.
Writing
**As we are digging deeper into the age of exploration, students wrote an opinion essay about the motivations of explorers. Utilizing information they've read and researched, the students determined the two main motivators that influenced explorers. The students also worked really hard to polish and edit their essays to include all the criteria of an opinion essay. The students are currently analyzing the effects of Christopher Columbus to write another opinion essay. Was he a hero or a villain? Remember to ask your students what he/she believes to be true!
Math
**We are in the midst of Unit 6 in math, and it includes several math targets. We have worked on graphing ordered pairs on a coordinate grid and classifying polygons using geometrical concepts such as the quadrilateral hierarchy and classification of triangles by sides and angles. Recently, we just started working on finding volume of a three dimensional object. The students learned that there are two formulas to finding volume -- length x width x height AND base x height. We will continue to explore this target after break.

Social Studies
**We just finished up our supply and demand targets. Students discussed the relationship between supply and demand in real world contexts. We also engaged in a musical chair stimulation to demonstrate the concepts of supply and demand. After break, we will continue to explore trade by discussing goods and services and the cultural exchange. We will be looking at early American “cash crops” and how they shaped our early economies.
Science
**Our unit focuses on matter and how it goes through changes. We just performed an investigation about identifying mystery substances by its properties such as texture, solubility, and reactivity. We will continue to learn about the changes in matter and how scientists perform tests to analyze those changes.
