Good afternoon families,

While this week was Teacher Appreciation Week, I was reminded about the wonderful students who make teaching joyful and such an adventure! I absolutely love my job because of this bright and quirky bunch. With that being said, I cannot believe the days that I have left with them are dwindling! It felt as if it was just yesterday that they walked through my classroom door on the first day of fifth grade. What a year of excitement, growth, and learning. It'll be a bittersweet ending indeed (*sniff sniff*).

Although summer is quickly approaching, school is not over just yet. There are still plenty of exciting happenings within our classroom! Continue to read all about it.

Literacy
We finished reading George's Secret Key to the Universe. The students really enjoyed reading the novel as well as learning more information about the universe. Stephen and Lucy Hawking have written other novels in the "George" series. If your student enjoyed our shared reading novel, it might be worthwhile to check out the other novels in the series. In addition, we read other grade level texts with the theme of "Understanding the Universe". We read about Michael Collins, an astronaut on Apollo 11, in "The Man Who Went to the Far Side of the Moon". Collins worked with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to successfully land on the moon. Although Collins did not actually step on the moon, he played an important role in securing the success of the mission. We also read "Mayday on the Moon of Jupiter", a story about two characters accidentally landing on Europa and finding evidence of water. Within these grade level texts, we continued to work on literacy targets and skills.

Writing
We are finishing up our sci-fi narratives and developing a theme throughout the stories. The students have really enjoyed planning and writing their sci-fi narratives. Their brains are filled with such impressive creativity and imagination!

Math
We are continuing to work on dividing and multiplying powers of ten. We are also reviewing multi-digit multiplication and division. Students were exposed to different strategies such as partial products, partial quotients, ratio tables, and area model to help them with their computational fluency.

Social Studies
The Trade Fair was a success! I was so impressed by all of the students' projects!! They blew it out of the water. It is evident that they thought and worked hard on their projects. The students truly enjoyed showcasing their projects and being able to trade with all the fifth graders. Be sure to ask your student all about Trade Fair and what they traded their projects for! After our economics unit, we will be learning about geography and relative location.

Science
We have been learning about how engineers create new materials after analyzing criteria and constraints. The students were given the opportunity to think like engineers and design their own materials. They came to a conclusion that a major constraint is money when creating new materials such as clothes, technology, etc.
